Tropics Neon Sign

The Tropics restaurant opened in 1950 by Vince Schwenoha. The site included a large, signature neon sign that quickly became the symbol of the restaurant and a Route 66 landmark. In 1955, Lew & Bev Johnson became owners of the Tropics until 1997 when it closed. In 2016, the Tropics was inducted into the Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame. The neon sign is fully restored.

Postville Courthouse State Historic Site

A replica of the 1800s Postville Courthouse where Abraham Lincoln once practiced law while in the 8th Judicial Court Circuit. This beautiful two story attraction offers a nice guided tour of the building and the grounds which also offers a medicinal garden of that era as well.

Phone Booth on a Roof

Perched atop the fire house in Lincoln, Illinois is a lone phone box that seems to have simply fallen out of the sky and landed on the building, but in fact the glass phone enclosure was installed to help warn against massive storms.


During the 1960s weather prediction technology was not what it is today, but the need for the service was possibly even more pressing. The simplest way to find out what was coming was to get to a high vantage point and take a look. Unfortunately under high winds and rains, this presented its own problems. However the technology for keeping people safe from the elements while they talked on the phone had already arrived in the form of the classic phone booth.

Kickapoo Creek Park

Kickapoo Creek Park, located at 2000 North Jefferson Street in Lincoln, Illinois, is a 160-acre natural haven managed by the Logan County Park & Trails Foundation. Approximately half of the park is forested, with the serene Kickapoo Creek winding through the landscape. Visitors can explore numerous hiking trails on both sides of the creek, including a designated exercise trail and paths suitable for cross-country skiing during winter months. Amenities include picnic pavilions, tables, public restrooms, and access to city water. The park is open year-round from 7 a.m. to half an hour after sunset.
